Umran Malik’s IPL and domestic career
Malik was 18, one of the members of the Jammu & Kashmir Under-19 team, and had just started playing leather ball cricket just a year before. But he was yet to make his debut in the Cooch Behar Trophy.
Fortunately, India’s U19 selectors who had come to visit Vaishno Devi Mandir were stunned to see him bowling in the nets on a cement wicket and asked. “Who are you? Why are you not playing matches?” Then selectors approached J&K U-19 coaches and suggested they give Malik a chance.
He made his Twenty20 debut on 18 January 2021, for Jammu & Kashmir in the 2020–21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. And the same year he made his List A debut on 27 February 2021, for Jammu & Kashmir in the 2020–21 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Malik’s IPL career exemplifies the Indian Premier League’s timeline of ‘where talent meets opportunity’.
He was one of the three net bowlers, who got selected for the 2021 Indian Premier League. In 2021 his career took a new turn when Sunrisers Hyderabad signed him up as a “short-term Covid-19 replacement” for T Natarajan, who had to be placed in isolation after testing positive for the virus before the start of the team’s game against Delhi Capitals on September 22.
Once the Sunrisers had lost the race to the playoffs, they provided Malik an opportunity in playing XI, against Kolkata Knight Riders. He had just bowled three balls when the cricketing world started asking: who is this guy?
Malik touched 150kph in his very first over, and a couple more times in the match. Until then, he was not aware that could bowl at that speed.
“I thought I could bowl around 140-145kph max. I hadn’t checked my pace before playing in IPL,” he says. “Making my debut in the IPL and performing well in the first match was the most special moment of my life.”
As a result of his fast bowling, he was named as a net bowler for India’s team for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. On 23 November 2021, he made his first-class debut for India A against South Africa A.
In the IPL 2022 auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad retained him. Malik’s career-best performance came on 27 April 2022, in the 2022 Indian Premier League match against the Gujarat Titans, when he took his first five wickets in Twenty20 cricket.
Umran Malik won the Emerging Player of the Season award for the Tata IPL, 2022. He took 22 wickets in 14 matches, including his best figure of 5/25 against Gujrat Titans in a losing cause.
International career
Umran Malik was part of India’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for a five-match series against South Africa. Though he only warmed the bench. He made his Twenty20 International debut against Ireland on Jun 26, 2022, at Ireland, the Village, also giving his international career a dream start as he took 4 for 20 in his T20I debut match.
His ODI debut came in November 2022 against New Zealand. He got the wicket of Devon Conway in the same match.
Malik is still relatively inexperienced, but he has the potential to be a match-winner for India in the years to come. He is a tall and athletic bowler with a good seam position, and he can generate a lot of pace and bounce from the wicket. He is also a very accurate bowler, and he can bowl yorkers and slower balls at will.
Without a doubt a rising star in Indian cricket and he is expected to play a big role for India in the years to come.

Umran Malik’s entry into professional cricket
His popularity soared in tennis-ball cricket, so he decided to try his hand at leather-ball cricket. During his debut local match in 2017, he smashed some massive sixes and bowled with great speed.
As word of his talent spread, he earned the nickname “Ghajini” for his resemblance to Aamir Khan’s character from the famous Bollywood movie. With his short hair and strong physique, people likened him to Ghajini.
His friends suggested he seek coaching to enhance his skills, so he headed to MA Stadium where he met Randhir Singh Manhas, a local coach. Manhas vividly remembers Malik’s first session: “I didn’t have many bowlers that morning, so when he approached me, I simply said, ‘Ok, you can bowl’.
After bowling just a couple of deliveries, Ram Dayal, a senior cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir, entered the scene. He paused by the nets and observed for a while. “Who’s this guy?” Dayal inquired. “He’s got natural talent and bowls at speeds between 135 to 140 kilometers per hour,” recalls Manhas.
Impressed by his potential, Manhas encouraged his new student to attend daily sessions at the stadium. While Malik had many strengths, there were a few areas that needed refinement. “He was gifted, especially coming from a Cosco tennis-ball background where bowlers tend to be quick,” notes Manhas. “However, his technique in terms of jumping and landing needed improvement, so we worked on that. Later, when Irfan Pathan visited as a mentor for Jammu and Kashmir, he also provided valuable guidance.”
Sharing the training ground with Malik was Abdul Samad, a younger but more experienced cricketer who would later represent Jammu and Kashmir and Sunrisers Hyderabad. They started training together regularly. “I knew Samad before, but we became closest friends in 2018,” recalls Malik. “Now, we’re more like brothers.”
Despite his dedication, Malik’s cricketing journey faced obstacles. During trials for the Jammu and Kashmir under-19 team, he encountered a setback. “They told me I hadn’t played at the district level, so I couldn’t participate in the trials,” he recounts.
Undeterred, Malik returned the next day. “I went to the nets, and since they weren’t certain about my district-level experience, I began bowling. After just one delivery, the selector approached me and assured, ‘You’ll be in the team, don’t worry. Just be prepared.'”
“He made his debut here in Jammu,” recalls Thaploo. “His first delivery flew over the keeper’s head, leaving the umpires stunned. They questioned if he had competed at the national level before.”
The next year, Malik faced rejection at the under-23 trials. In February 2020, Samad, now part of the Jammu and Kashmir Ranji Trophy team, appealed to the under-23 team coach on Malik’s behalf. It was also Samad who, after being selected by Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2020 IPL, recommended Malik as a net bowler to the franchise. “I asked Samad to send my videos to them,” Malik remarks.
Malik’s pace caught the attention of elite batters at the Sunrisers camp. Kedar Jadhav once inquired if Malik was a team member or a net bowler. Recalling proudly, Thaploo says, “He was bowling so fast to Jonny Bairstow in the nets that Bairstow requested him to slow down. However, since Malik didn’t understand much English, he kept bowling fast. Then someone from the SRH camp approached him and said, ‘He’s asking you to bowl slower; you’re bowling too fast!'”
His standout performance as a net bowler in the 2020 IPL secured his place with the franchise for 2021. In September of that year, during the second leg of the competition, he received a call from the state cricket association to return to Jammu for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy trials. Instead, he found himself included in the Sunrisers team as a short-term replacement for T Natarajan, who had tested positive for Covid-19 in Dubai.
“Thank God, I was included in the team; otherwise, I would have had to travel back the next day,” says Malik. “It was an incredible feeling.”
Once Sunrisers were out of the playoffs race, Malik was given a chance in the playing XI against Kolkata Knight Riders. Just three balls into his spell, the cricketing world began to take notice: who is this player?
Malik clocked 150 kilometers per hour in his very first over and repeated it a couple more times during the game. Until then, he was unaware of his bowling speeds.
